The "Sticker Shock" I get asked every day: "Is Japan still cheap?" It depends on where you go. Niseko now has prices similar to Whistler or Chamonix. But if you head to a local mountain in Nagano or Tohoku, it’s still half the price. At JapanSnowWatch, we’ve averaged out the daily costs for the 2026/2027 season—using last season’s published rates as the baseline—so you can plan your wallet. --- 1. The "Big Three" Daily Costs (Per Person) Low Budget (Hostels & Konbini): $120 - $150 USD / day. Stay in a dorm, eat 7-11 breakfast/dinner, buy your lift pass at a discount. Mid-Range (Pensions & Izakayas): $250 - $350 USD / day. Stay in a private room at a lodge, eat at decent restaurants, rent "standard" gear.

Luxury (Chalets & Fine Dining):: $600+ USD / day. Ski-in/ski-out, private chefs, private guides, premium demo rentals. 2. The Rising Cost of Lift Tickets Average: Expect to pay 8,000 - 10,000 Yen ($55 - $70 USD) for a day pass at a major resort. Small Resorts: Still around 4,500 - 6,000 Yen. Note: Figures are last season’s published rates. Most resorts announce 2026/27 pricing in October—check our resort pages for the latest numbers. 3. Food: The One Place You Save Food in Japan is still incredible value.

Mountain Lunch: 1,200 - 1,800 Yen. Izakaya Dinner: 3,000 - 5,000 Yen including 2 beers. Beer:: 600 - 900 Yen. --- Buy your yen before you get to the resort towns. The ATMs in small mountain villages have terrible exchange rates and often run out of cash. Use a card like Wise to lock in a good rate when the Yen is weak. Keep an eye on our Deals Page—we post whenever a resort launches their "Early Bird" lift ticket sales.
