The "Green Christmas" Fear Every year, we see photos of thin strips of white snow on green mountains in Switzerland. The Reality: Japan is geographically unique. The cold air from Siberia crosses the (relatively warm) Sea of Japan, picks up massive moisture, and slams into the Japanese Alps. It is a factory line of snow clouds. At JapanSnowWatch, we track the accumulation data. --- 1. The Numbers Niseko Average: 15 meters/season. Verbier Average: ~6-8 meters/season. Whistler Average: ~11 meters/season (but often heavy/wet).
2. The Consistency In the Alps, you might get a 1-meter dump, followed by 2 weeks of sun. In Hokkaido during January, it snows almost every day. 10cm, 20cm, 30cm. It rarely stops. The Result: You almost never encounter "ice" or "bare ground" in peak season. You are skiing on a constantly refreshed surface. 3. The Temperature Japan is cold, but not "Canadian Rockies" cold.
Hokkaido: Consistently -5°C to -10°C. This preserves the snow without freezing your lungs. Nagano: Slightly warmer, but high elevation (Shiga Kogen) keeps the quality dry. --- The only downside to the "Snow Machine" is Visibility. If it's snowing every day, it's cloudy every day.
