The Pro: You land in Ishikawa. You are only 2.5 hours away from Hakuba or Myoko. The Benefit:: The airport is tiny. You can walk from the plane to the car rental counter in 10 minutes. 2. Sendai Airport (SDJ) - For Tohoku Powder The Route: Direct from Seoul, Taipei, and Bangkok. The Pro: This is the gateway to Zao Onsen and the Tohoku region. The Benefit:: Tohoku has some of the deepest, least-crowded snow in Japan. Flying to Sendai means you skip the Shinkansen ride from Tokyo.
3. Toyama Airport (TOY) - For Lotte Arai The Route: Direct from Seoul. The Pro: You are right at the base of the Japanese Alps. The Benefit:: Perfect if you want to skip the "Tokyo Tax" and get straight into authentic, rural Japan. --- If you fly into a regional airport, rent a car. Public transport from these smaller hubs to the ski resorts can be sparse. Having your own 4WD will turn a logistical hurdle into a scenic road trip. Jump on Skyscanner or Google Flights and try plugging in 'KMQ' or 'SDJ' as your destination—you might be surprised by the direct routes available.
