Do You Really Need to Book Everything in Advance?

Accommodation? Yes. Lift tickets? Maybe. Food? Sometimes. We rank what needs booking and what can wait.

The Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) Internet forums will tell you that if you didn't book your Niseko trip 12 months ago, you are doomed. The Reality: Japan is busy, but it’s not Mars. You can survive without booking everything. You just need to prioritize. --- 1. MUST BOOK (The "Red" Zone) Accommodation (Jan/Feb): If you are traveling in peak season, book this now. Even if it's 6 months out. The good, cheap places vanish first. English Ski Lessons: There is a massive shortage of instructors.

If you need a lesson in English, book it the day bookings open. Wifi Router:: If you want to pick it up at the airport, reserve it 1 week prior. They run out of stock. 2. SHOULD BOOK (The "Yellow" Zone) Airport Bus (Chitose to Niseko): It’s good to have a seat, but you can usually squeeze onto the next one if you miss it. High-End Dinners: If you want Michelin stars or the famous "Soba" place, book it. Rental Gear:: You get a discount for booking online, but you can always just walk in. They rarely run out of skis. 3.

DON'T BOTHER (The "Green" Zone) Lift Tickets: Unless you want the online discount, you can buy these at the machine on the day. They never sell out. Shinkansen Tickets: Unless it's New Year's week, you can buy a "Non-Reserved" seat at the station 10 minutes before the train leaves. Lunch:: Just ski into the cafeteria. --- Lock in your Bed and your Teacher. Everything else can be figured out when you land. Don't over-plan the fun out of your trip. Leave some gaps for discovery.
