Happo-one has the biggest vertical in Hakuba and the most wind holds. Learn which forecast signals matter.
Reading a Happo forecast Happo-one runs from around 760 m to 1,830 m, so a single forecast number rarely describes the whole mountain. Rain at the base can be 20 cm of new snow at Usagidaira on the same day. What to watch Start with the freezing level: below 1,000 m means good snow quality top to bottom, while anything higher turns the lower slopes to slush or rain.
For snowfall, 10-20 cm overnight is the sweet spot, giving fresh powder over a groomed base without burying the lifts in a full closure. Wind is the wildcard. Once gusts climb above roughly 15 m/s, expect the Grat and Alpen quads to hold, so build a backup plan around the lower, more sheltered lifts on gusty days.
Season timing Happo usually opens in early December and runs into early May. The most consistent depth is late January through February, and spring corn snow on the lower faces is excellent in late March.
