Planning a Family Ski Trip to Japan: What to Check Before You Book

Four questions about transfers, beginner lifts, lessons and base facilities that narrow down a family ski resort in Japan.

Four questions for every resort on your shortlist

Ask these about each resort before you pay a deposit. Together they cover the parts of a family trip that are hardest to fix once you arrive.

  1. How long is it from the airport or station to the door?
  2. Is the beginner area served by its own slow lift?
  3. Are lessons available in English or Korean, and do they need booking ahead?
  4. Is there a rest area at the base with food and lockers?

How the regions compare on those questions

Nagano has wide beginner zones and short transfers from the shinkansen. Niigata has the closest big resorts to Tokyo, and many of them run kids' snow parks. Hokkaido resorts have good facilities and lessons, but the travel day is longer.

Where to find the answers

Rental prices and beginner terrain are listed on each resort page. The Japan ski map shows where each resort sits relative to stations and airports, and the season calendar shows which ones are open on your dates.
