How much snow Niseko really gets, when the lifts open, and how to read the 7-day forecast before booking.
Snow at Niseko Niseko United sits on the west side of Hokkaido, directly in the path of storms crossing the Sea of Japan. Mid-winter base depths commonly reach 250-350 cm at upper stations, and December through February usually brings snow on the majority of days. Season window Lifts typically start turning from late November to early December, and conditions peak from early January through late February.
On the Annupuri and Grand Hirafu side the season usually runs into early May. Reading the forecast Watch daily snowfall and wind together. Niseko's upper gates close in strong westerlies, so a 30 cm day with 20 m/s wind often means lower-mountain tree runs instead of the peak.
