Zao Onsen Snow & Weather Guide: Snow Monsters, Wind and Visibility

Zao gets deep snow and heavy wind. Here is how to time a trip for snow monsters and open lifts.

Why Zao is different Zao Onsen in Yamagata builds its famous juhyo (snow monsters) from wind-driven rime ice, which means the same weather that creates them also shuts the ropeway. Understanding that trade-off is the whole trick. Best window The snow monsters are at their best from late January to late February, and this is also when the base is deepest, often passing 200 cm up high.

The season itself runs into early May, though the juhyo are a mid-winter phenomenon rather than something you'll see on a spring visit. Wind and visibility Upper Zao is exposed. On storm days the Zao Ropeway upper section frequently stops and visibility drops to a whiteout.

Build a three-day buffer into your trip so you get at least one clear morning for the monsters, and ski the treeline runs when the top is closed.
