The Reality: If you stay only in the ski villages, you’ll miss the truly iconic "Old Japan" winter visuals. --- 1. Otaru Canal (Blue Hour) Location: 45 mins from Sapporo. The Shot: The historic brick warehouses reflected in the water, lined with floating lanterns during the "Snow Light Path" festival in February. Yuki's Pro-Tip:: Go at "Blue Hour" (30 mins after sunset) for the best contrast.
2. Shirakawa-go (The Fairy Tale) Location: Gifu Prefecture (reachable from Myoko or Hakuba). The Shot: The thatched-roof "Gassho-zukuri" farmhouses under 2 meters of snow. The Catch:: It is very crowded. You must book the "Light Up" tickets months in advance. 3. Zao Snow Monsters (Juhyo) Location: Yamagata Prefecture.
The Shot: Trees covered in so much rime ice they look like giant white monsters. The Gear:: Bring a wide-angle lens. These things are huge. --- Your phone battery will die in the cold. Keep your phone inside your jacket, close to your body heat. If you take it out for 10 minutes at -10°C, it will drop from 80% to 0%.
