Gala Yuzawa Day Trip from Tokyo — Shinkansen, Fares, Rental, Last Train

How to do a Gala Yuzawa day trip from Tokyo: the direct Joetsu Shinkansen and journey time, typical fares, JR train-plus-lift packs, rental and lift tickets in the station building, the last train back, and staying a night in Yuzawa.

GALA Yuzawa is a ski resort built into a shinkansen station, which makes it one of the easiest places to ski from Tokyo. In winter direct trains run from Tokyo in as little as 71 minutes, and rental and lift tickets are in the building you walk into from the platform, so you can go without any gear.

Getting there by shinkansen: In winter, Joetsu Shinkansen "Tanigawa" trains run from Tokyo Station straight to GALA Yuzawa station, 71 minutes on the fastest service (GALA Yuzawa). You can also board at Ueno. Direct trains run on set dates only; in 2025-26 they ran daily from December to February. When there is no direct train, get off at Echigo-Yuzawa and take the free shuttle bus, about 10 minutes. JR East had not announced its 2026-27 winter trains as of 22 October, so check for the announcement.

Fares and train-plus-lift packs: A reserved seat from Tokyo to GALA Yuzawa costs roughly ¥7,000 each way. It varies by season, so check the exact fare on Eki-net. GALA's official site links to JR East's Byu "Dynamic Rail Pack", which bundles the shinkansen with a lift ticket, and to early-bird lift tickets on JRE MALL. Pack prices change by date, so compare one against a return ticket plus a lift ticket bought separately.

What is in the station building: The ticket gates open onto the second floor of the Cowabunga ski centre, with the rental shop on the same floor (JR East). The building also has the lift ticket counters, a locker room and an onsen, and the gondola leaves from here. GALA lists the ticket counter at 8:00–17:00 and the gondola at 8:30–16:30. A day ticket costs ¥8,000 at the counter or ¥7,500 online; a 4-hour ticket is ¥7,000 online.

Can I go with no gear at all? Yes. Rental, a locker room and lift ticket counters are in the building you walk into from the platform.

How long does it take from Tokyo? 71 minutes on the fastest direct winter shinkansen. When there is no direct train, change at Echigo-Yuzawa for a free shuttle bus of about 10 minutes.
