Where to Stay in Yuzawa — Which Base to Book

Which Yuzawa base to book: Echigo-Yuzawa town, GALA Yuzawa, Naeba and Kagura (Mitsumata) compared on getting to the lifts, evening food and rough nightly rates.

Yuzawa town has more than ten ski areas and three realistic bases: Echigo-Yuzawa, with the shinkansen station and the onsen town; Naeba, up in the mountains roughly 40 minutes from the station; and Mitsumata, the entrance to Kagura. GALA Yuzawa has its own shinkansen station but almost no lodging, so people skiing there usually sleep in Echigo-Yuzawa.

First trip, arriving by train: Echigo-Yuzawa town — shinkansen, onsen, restaurants and buses to several resorts.

Skiing GALA Yuzawa: Near Echigo-Yuzawa Station. The free shuttle to GALA takes about 10 minutes.

Sleeping on the slopes: Naeba — the Naeba Prince Hotel faces the ski runs.

Spring skiing: Kagura (Mitsumata) — usually open into May, the latest in Yuzawa.

Echigo-Yuzawa town — Vibe: Onsen town by the station. Best for: First trip, train travel, skiing several resorts. Getting to the lifts: Bus or shuttle.

GALA Yuzawa — Vibe: Station and slopes in one building. Best for: Day trips, one or two nights. Getting to the lifts: Almost no lodging — stay by the station.

Naeba — Vibe: Big resort hotel. Best for: Families, staying on the slopes. Getting to the lifts: Slopes in front of the hotel.

Kagura / Mitsumata — Vibe: Quiet mountain hamlet. Best for: Spring skiing, powder. Getting to the lifts: Near the ropeway base.

Echigo-Yuzawa town: The fastest Joetsu Shinkansen reaches Echigo-Yuzawa from Tokyo in 66 minutes. The town has been an onsen resort for more than 900 years, and inns, hotels, restaurants and public baths sit around the station. Nearby areas such as Yuzawa Kogen and Iwappara are easy to reach, and this is the only base where you can walk out to dinner. Best for: First-time visitors, train travellers, skiing a different resort each day. Typical nightly rate: Roughly ¥8,000–¥30,000 a night (rough guide; varies a lot by date). Getting to the lifts: Free shuttle to GALA Yuzawa in about 10 minutes; buses and shuttles to other resorts.

GALA Yuzawa (stay by Echigo-Yuzawa Station): You step off the train into the Cowabunga ski centre, with rental, a locker room and an onsen in the same building. There is almost nowhere to sleep at the resort itself, so stay near Echigo-Yuzawa Station. For 2026-27 GALA has suspended its South Area, and the ropeway link to Yuzawa Kogen is replaced by a shuttle bus. Best for: Turning a day trip into an overnight, skiing with rental gear. Typical nightly rate: Roughly ¥8,000–¥30,000 a night near the station (rough guide). Getting to the lifts: Direct shinkansen to GALA Yuzawa station in winter; free shuttle from Echigo-Yuzawa in about 10 minutes.

Naeba: The 1,216-room Naeba Prince Hotel faces the ski runs, which are lit for night skiing. The Dragondola, Japan's longest gondola at 5,481 m, links Naeba with the Tashiro side of Kagura, and a joint ticket covers both. Pensions and minshuku line the road nearby, but evening restaurants are limited. Best for: Families, a big hotel on the slopes, skiing Naeba and Kagura together. Typical nightly rate: Roughly ¥10,000–¥40,000 a night (varies widely by date and room). Getting to the lifts: The slopes are in front of the Naeba Prince Hotel; about 40 minutes by bus from Echigo-Yuzawa.

Kagura / Mitsumata: The hamlet at the entrance to Kagura, where the Mitsumata ropeway takes you up to the Kagura area. In 2025-26 the Mitsumata side ran from 22 November to 17 May (Yuzawa tourism association). Wada-goya, a lodge on the mountain, also takes winter guests. Lodging is small-scale and evenings are quiet, so book half-board. Best for: Spring skiing, snow quality, a quiet stay. Typical nightly rate: Roughly ¥8,000–¥20,000 a night, mostly minshuku and small inns (rough guide). Getting to the lifts: Some lodgings are within walking distance of the Mitsumata ropeway.

If you will ski GALA, Yuzawa Kogen, Iwappara and the other areas near the station, stay in Echigo-Yuzawa. If you will ski only Naeba and Kagura, stay at Naeba or Mitsumata.

The bus from the station to Naeba and Mitsumata takes roughly 40 minutes. Sleeping near the mountain you plan to ski saves more time than commuting every day.

Direct shinkansen to GALA Yuzawa station run mainly in the ski season. Check JR East's timetable for your dates.

GALA Yuzawa has announced slope operation from 19 December 2026 to 5 May 2027, with gondola-only sightseeing from 12 to 18 December.

Naeba and Kagura had not announced 2026-27 dates as of 22 October 2026. Last season Naeba ran 13 December to 5 April and Kagura's Mitsumata side 22 November to 17 May (Yuzawa tourism association).

New Year, January and February weekends, and Japanese holidays fill the whole area. Book early for those dates.

From April, Kagura and GALA keep running while Naeba and most others close, so for spring skiing stay at Mitsumata or by Echigo-Yuzawa Station.

Where can I ski latest in the season? Kagura. Its Mitsumata side ran until 17 May in 2025-26. GALA Yuzawa plans to run until 5 May in 2026-27.
